January 11 aka What Works

“Here you go, pumpkin.”

Clark looked up from his notes, where he was scribbling down paragraphs for his article. Lois handed him a mug filled with coffee. Her teasing grin was infectious and he responded in kind. “Thanks, muffin,” he replied.

Lois settled in the chair across from him and turned his notepad towards her, interrupting his writing. She lifted her own mug to her lips, sipping the hot liquid as she perused his handwritten scrawls. There was little to no traffic at the Metro Coffee Stop, the hours after lunch being relatively slow, and Clark liked that he and Lois had the outside tables to themselves for the time being.

“Not bad, Smallville,” she said, turning the writing pad back towards him. “Keep it up and you might move past the middle of the paper.”

“Like the front page?”

“You’ll have to get past me first.”

Clark smiled at her competitive expression and flipped to a fresh sheet of lined paper. A minute or two passed before Clark realized it was a little too quiet. He looked up again to see Lois staring at him. Worry shot through him, but then he noticed her gaze was not blank; in fact, there was a fair amount of amusement.

Relieved, but masking it carefully, he asked, “What?”

If she noticed, she didn’t say anything. She tilted her head and casually answered, “I’m testing out nicknames in my head.”

Aside from her favorite, Clark had already lost track of how many names she had bestowed upon him over the years. “For me?” he asked.

“For me. I thought I might save you the trouble of making one up,” she explained. “You know, and me absolutely hating it.”

“You don’t have to worry,” he replied, a wry note in his tone. “Nicknames have always been your thing.”

“Yeah. Me and Chloe and Oliver,” she said. “Hmm. Who’s missing?” She took another sip of her coffee. “It’s only a matter of time.”

He placed his pen down. “What did you have in mind?” he asked. While he wasn’t the type to use nicknames as liberally as his friends, he couldn’t say he wasn’t curious.

Lois leaned back, her loose hair tumbling over her shoulders in just the way he liked. Her blue blouse complemented the light gray of her matching jacket and pencil skirt. “Well, for very special occasions, Goddess Divine,” she said.

A smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth. “Oh, of course.”

“And y’know, ‘your highness’, ‘number one’…” She lifted a finger to count off her suggestions.

He looked around before he added, with a touch of amusement, “… Stiletto.”

She winced. “Ha, ha.” She poked his hand, the one wrapped around his coffee mug. “Maybe something that doesn’t remind me of squeaky leather?”

“Squeaky? I remember it being...” He schooled his expression carefully. “… tight.”

She narrowed her eyes and he let a cheeky grin shine through. “Why don’t we focus on you for awhile? I’ve got some names on reserve. Though…” She pursed her lips thoughtfully. “… you don’t look like a ‘cutie pie’ or a ‘sugarbear’.”

“Thanks,” he said dryly. “I think I prefer ‘Clarkie’.”

She cocked her head to the side as she studied him. She listed the names off with a brief pause in-between, the crease between her eyes deepening as if she was giving each label serious thought. “Honey. Cupcake. Dumpling. Green bean.”

He bit back a retort about Oliver already claiming that particular name. “Are those nicknames or a grocery list?” he asked.

“Both.” She shrugged, though there was a peculiar twinkle to her eye. “That reminds me, I have to stop by the store later…” Her lips quirked up at his nonplussed look. “What? You don’t like being named after food?”

Clark shook his head. “Not really,” he said, “peanut.”

She scrunched her nose. “Yeah… no.”

“I’m also partial to ‘muffin’,” he replied. He smiled at her exaggerated shudder. “Don’t like it… baby?” He paused, considering. “Baby doll.”

“Call me ‘baby doll’ again and I’m breaking up with you. Right now.”

He pressed his lips together to keep from laughing. He began listing names in the same manner she had. “Sweetheart. Darling. My little… tornado.”

Her scoff broke off into a laugh. “That’s one for the books.”

“Or how about ‘sailor’,” he said, grinning at the memory, “sailor?”

She blinked, and it was only the slightest tint of red that let him know she remembered. “Who knew?” she asked.

“Who knew what?” He brought the mug to his mouth.

“Stiletto. Sailor,” she said nonchalantly. “You have a fetish for costumes?”

He almost choked on the coffee he was drinking, and settled for coughing into a napkin.

Lois continued, enjoying his squirming, but unaware of the real reason. “Even Clark Kent’s mind wanders to the gutter every now and then,” she said.

Clark adjusted his tie, neither confirming nor denying her statement. By the delighted sparkle in her smile, he knew she noticed. “Any special reason why nicknames have been on your mind, more so than usual?” he asked.

“I was stuck in an elevator with a sickeningly sweet couple,” she said. “Y’know, the kind that make you feel like your teeth are rotting.” She shrugged. “It got the ball rolling.”

“Well, we’re not like other couples, Lois,” Clark said.

Lois smiled, looking down at her coffee mug.

“I’d rather stick to what works,” he said, “for you and for me.”

“You just don’t want me calling you ‘dumpling’,” she replied, waving a hand in the air dismissively.

“There’s that,” Clark said, lips twitching.

Lois hummed. “Well. Give it time,” she said. Then she winked. “… handsome.”

Thank you~! ♥ ♥ It's my personal canon that, aside from Smallville, Lois would call him 'handsome'. I just love that. ;)

Mmkay, that was pretty much perfection. Clark and Lois and nicknames, what's not to love? Both of their suggestions were cracking me up (I liked peanut, baby doll and sailor the best, I think) and you even got an LnC shoutout in there!

I love the teasing about Clark having a thing for costumes (sexy and ironic!), and her calling him handsome in the end. Like I said, perfection. I'm loving reading all of these!

Thanks~! ♥ I had such a difficult time writing this, but it came out much better than my first attempt days ago. :D I have such a fondness for 'sailor' - seriously, that ending scene in Exposed... ♥ That Clark makes me smile so much. ;)

Oh yeah, I love that line from LnC. ROFL. I had to put it in. And the 'Goddess Divine' line is actually from the most recent Pride & Prejudice movie with Kiera Knightley. :D

We all know Clark thinks about those costumes... and Lois in them. -coughs- ;D If Lois calls Clark 'handsome' just once - once! - in Smallville canon, I'd be ridiculously happy. It's my personal canon that, aside from Smallville, it would be her most used nickname. :P

Your comments make me smile. ♥ Thanks so much for that! :D :D

Haha, yeah, I might be posting solely on LJ for awhile, just because it makes things easier. Unfortunately, haven't written anything new just yet, but I have some scenarios bouncing around in my head...

Anyways, yay! I'm glad this was what you were expecting. :D I'd say this was a success then.

Lois needs to call Clark "handsome" on the show. Seriously. It needs to happen.

Thanks for commenting!
